Video: International Dot Day In Becker

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-Some Monroe County students are being encouraged to make their mark on society and a simple school exercise is preparing young people to be productive on the global scale. At the Monroe County Advanced Learning Center, in Becker, teachers are using a witty story and free spirited illustrations to make their students more creative. The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds, tells the tale of a discouraged little girl named Vashti who makes a dot.

“And then she says well I can do better than that, and then she makes another dot and then she just keeps making art work and it grows and grows and grows,” said Kelly young, ACL Teacher.

“The teacher made her stand up, I guess it just kind of, she stood out to the other kids too after that,” said Kaley Beth Loague. ACL Student.

Children of all ages, across America, have read The Dot. Its lesson is simple but inspiring.

“At the end of the book she ends up encouraging other people,” said Young.

“I did two dots, we made a shirt in art class and we did the dots over there on the canvasses,” said Anna Evans, ACL Student.

Like Vashti in the pages of The Dot, those scratchers are clawing out success, one squiggly scribble of paint at a time.

“Making your mark on the world and, is very important. And that’s what I was thinking about whenever I made my dots,” said Evans.

“And they may not think they can initially, that if they would take the risk and start and try, then they never know where it might take them and who they might influence,” said Young.

“With Mrs Young showing us this and making our mark it helps me transition to college and know that whatever I do definitely make your mark on the world no matter what you do,” said Evans.

The students at the Learning Center are making plans on displaying their creative dots on a wall mural.
