TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)- Exploring family history. That’s what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is known for. Saturday they held Tupelo Family History Discovery Day offering classes to the public on how to search records and compile family history using the latest high tech tools.

The Mormons have one of the most exhaustive genealogical databases in the world. Kay Nelson is the Family History Director for the Church in the Northeast Mississippi area. She says they have a specific reason that her church members seek out the records of their ancestors.

“We have people that have passed on and they didn’t the message or they were not able to be baptized and they didn’t get the gospel so we that for them. And the scriptures tell us that baptism has to be done here. So we do it for the dead and they have free agency to accept it or reject it,”

Nelson says anyone who is not member of the church can use their resources free of charge by contacting the church.
