COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Fridays rains did not slow down the rash of grass and brush fires in the region. Lowndes County volunteers and the State Forestry Commission spent Monday afternoon trying to knock down the fire off Nobel Lane in Southwest Lowndes County.

Neighbors say a rubbish and brush fire got out of control and spread across the area. Lowndes County is not under a burn ban but the state Forestry Commission says drought conditions do exist in the area and any outside burning should be postponed if at all possible.
