Pontotoc, Miss. (WCBI) — Its been about two months now since Pontotoc Police Chief Randy Tutor was sworn in to office.

Just a short time on the job in a city of about 5,700 residents having a low crime rate, but Police Chief Randy Tudor admits he has been busy since a July first swearing in ceremony before Circuit Judge Jimmy Roberts that was very sobering and eye opening.

“Its an awesome responsibility when basically the well being of every citizen in Pontotoc is on my shoulders,” said Randy Tutor, Pontotoc Police Chief.

Starting out as a beat cop 31 years ago, Tutor has risen through the ranks and as a veteran law enforcer having a wealth of experience as an investigator. In his department there are 14 full time officers and 9 part timers. After serving in Pontotoc and for awhile in Tupelo, Chief Tutor is expecting to lead his men by example.

“I’m the chief of police but I’m still a police officer. And you know some of the things that go along with that is getting out with the men and doing it,” said Tutor.

In 2009 and 2012 Tutor spent time in Afghanistan, employed by the military as an advisor to U. S. Forces there.

“We weren’t there to train Afghans. We were there to train U. S. Soldiers and advise them on law enforcement matters,” said Tutor.

And so with conviction and readiness as he operates what he calls his dream job, Tudor wants to humbly serve as leader of his department.

“I want the community to know that the police department is there for them. I mean we are public servants and we want to do whats best for the community.”

When Police Chief Tutor first put on his uniform, it was at the age of 21.
