HAMILTON, Miss.(WCBI)–Corn planting season has begun in North Mississippi and farmers are holding their breath and watching the skies.

Looking over a Monroe County farm in Hamilton, its plain to see they are faring a little better than most. Corn planting season is upon us and some farmers are dealing with what has so far been a wet spring.

“Actually this will be our third wet spring in a row. If we do stay wet on into the month of April. But we’re still optimistic that we’ll get some dry weather and get some acres planted in a timely manner,” said Charlie Stokes/MSU Extension Service.

“We got about 220 acres planted about two weeks ago. And we are aiming to plant probably another five to six hundred acres if we can get it planed.”

There is sunshine right now over that corn field in Hamilton planted two weeks ago, but there is always the chance of more rain that could hinder the process of getting more seeds in the ground.

“Cool weather too but the cool weather really hadn’t hurt the, I don’t think the corn planting as much as the wet you know. Four inches of rain plus we got last week,” said Alan Atkins.

“Well right now we are looking somewhere around between I think $3.75 a bushel which is considerably lower that we’ve had the last few years,” said Charlie Stokes.

And so the eyes of corn farmers stay fixed looking at the clouds, and there is indeed optimism. Right now those skies are full of sunshine.

“Play the waiting game right now and just hope we can get in there sooner or later.”

The quicker the planting, the sooner the harvest.

In terms of crops, soybeans is the next between April tenth and 15th.
