COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–In our modern world of technology for many an IPhone is an investment that if stolen or misplaced can be a nightmare.

When your smartphone is stolen or can’t be found, immediate actions should be taken to insure valuable information is protected. However, before that happens a Columbus Police Department supervisor is informing us of certain precautionary layers of security.

So if you have a pin number or whatever type password. So if I got your phone, I wouldn’t be able to just automatically take your phone and start using it,” said Captain Fred Shelton/Columbus Police Department.

A stolen cell phone can re resold. Your calendar can be viewed, your home robbed, or you can even be stalked via GPS.

“So that the average public will know where you are at. So thats an App on your phone, you can turn that location off,” said Capt. Fred Shelton.

Outside of alerting law enforcement, your financial institution and or credit card company should be contacted.

“The responsibility is on you to let them know. The bank might not know if its you or someone else using your card or your information, or your phone to pretend they are you.” So make sure you let your bank know immediately if you suspect something is going wrong,” said John S. Oxford/Renasants Bank.

When it comes to theft or loss, C spire wireless smartphone representatives and other bank managers are encouraging their customers to treat their smartphones like they would their wallets.

“And also monitor the credit bureaus. There is three credit bureaus. And check them to make sure that someone is not trying to take out credit in your name,” said John S. Oxford.
