TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo voters overwhelmingly approved a $44 million bond package on Tuesday that will impact all schools in the district.

The unoffficial vote count was 2,800 to 476.

Members of the “Safe and Sound” Bond Committee watched returns at the Create Foundation offices on Tuesday night.

The $44 million bond package will take care of needed repairs at all schools in the district, upgrade security, and improve infrastructure.

Supporters say the strong response is encouraging.

“Three years ago, being a new superintendent with the challenges we had if you had told me we’d be going for a 44 million dollar bond issue I’d have been shaking my head and then tonight to see it pass with 80 percent or better majority is phenomenal, we have a great team, we have some of the best teachers you could ever ask for working with our teachers everyday,” said Tupelo Public School District Superintendent Dr. Gearl Loden.

The bond package will not require a tax increase because the new bonds replace others that are expiring this year.
