STARKVILLE,Miss.(WCBI)– GMO foods. It’s a term you have probably heard but may not know exactly what it means.

90% of farmers across American that plant corn, cotton or soybeans use some type of GMO seed.

“Target specific traits that will improve the productivity or the quality of the plants that we grow,” says Dr. Erick Larson with MSU Extension.

Those traits are natural enhancements.

“Desirable traits from other plants,” he says.

And are meant to improve the plants ability to fight off any issues.

“Herbicide resistance or insect resistance,” says Larson.

Meaning less chemicals need to be sprayed.

If you still are worried about safety, Dr. Erick Larson with MSU extension says all GMO products are thoroughly tested.

“Traits and technology goes through years of rigorous testing by United States governmental agencies like the EPA and the FDA,” says Larson.

He says many fears come from people not understanding the term, now that you know, buying or avoiding GMO’s is up to you.

Only 9 crops are available those include Papaya,Potatoes,Squash, and Sugar Beets.

Apples have also been recently approved and will be coming to market soon.
