AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — It is a Memorial Day Chadwick Monaghan and his family will never forget.

“It was a bad blur and a lot of loud noise.”

It was shortly after 8 30 Monday morning when Monaghan’s phone sounded a weather alert. He was on the second floor balcony of this apartment home near downtown Amory when he saw the tornado.

“I said honey, I think I’m in the tornado, she said, you’re not in the tornado, that branch came off, it actually picked me up, and I noticed that tree over there come completely out of the ground. ”

Monaghan gathered his kids, their mother and herded everyone into this tiny closet, under the stairs. In seconds, it was all over with. Everyone was shaken up, but no one was hurt.

Across the street, Travis York and his sons, were in their house.

“I look out my window here and see a limb flying through the car, didn’t realize all this other structural damage had happened, my windows made a busting sound but they didn’t bust.”

For Corey York, this was his second time in the path of a tornado. He survived the deadly Smithville tornado in 2011.

“This one didn’t seem as bad as the other one, it was still pretty bad, I don’t like it when the wind comes because it scares me.”

Not long after the tornado hit, first responders, city and county crews were on the scene, seeing what they could do and making sure everyone was ok. And Chadwick Monaghan, the young man who was in the middle of that tornado with his family, was going to help his neighbor across the street remove branches and tree trunks from his front yard. One of the many examples of neighbor helping neighbor.
