Video: Mayfield And Shelton End Defamation Lawsuit

TUPELO ( WCBI) – A defamation lawsuit pending against Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton is being dismissed.  Prominent Tupelo attorney Kenneth Mayfield sued Shelton following a press conference where the Mayor claimed Mayfield was part of the civil suit filed by the family of Ronnie Shumpert strictly for financial gain.  Both sides agreed to dismiss the suit and stressed that no money was involved in the settlement.  Below is the joint statement issued by both men

“During a very volatile time in the City of Tupelo this summer, statements were made between Mayor Jason Shelton and Kenneth Mayfield in the heat of the moments that did not reflect their longstanding relationships as neighbors, legal colleagues or the Tupelo spirit. One such statement by Mayor Shelton suggested that Kenneth Mayfield was involved in the Antwun Shumpert litigation for financial gain. This incorrect statement was the primary reason for the present litigation. The parties have now met, and it is agreed that Kenneth Mayfield was not financially involved in the Shumpert case and stood to gain nothing financially from that case against the City of Tupelo.

In a spirit of reconciliation the parties have come together to put their disagreement behind them for the betterment of the Tupelo community, and the subject lawsuit is being dismissed with no monetary settlement, and each party will bear his own costs.”
