LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A Millport, Ala. man died in a violent early Thursday morning traffic accident in eastern Lowndes County.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says 50-year-old Danny McCool was westbound on Highway 50 when he lost control of the Ford F-150 4×4 pickup he was driving, crossed the eastbound lane and struck a driveway culvert.

The impact ripped the rear wheels and axle off the truck and sent it flipping another 50 yards before it came to rest at a utility pole.

The accident happened in the 6800 block of Highway 50 East near Steens.

McCool was pronounced dead at the scene. Merchant says he wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

McCool was on his way to work at the Lowndes County Port Authority when the accident happened at about 5:45 a.m. Thursday.
