MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Monroe County man is dead Saturday morning after his truck collides head on into a tree.

According to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley, The accident happened at the intersection of US 278 and Highway 8 East at Greenwood Springs.

42 year old Randal Shawn Phillips of Wren was traveling on Highway 8 in his 1999 Chevy pickup when he failed to make the stop sign at the intersection of 278 and hit a tree head on.

Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple trauma.

Authorities say he was not wearing his seatbelt and was alone at the time of the accident.

    This is a sad event, one that’s happened many, many times. Wonder why the state/county has not applied so called rumble strips, speed bumps, or something at this intersection. It’s claimed the lives of many over the years. Why not remove the trees and install the pea gravel used to slow big trucks?
