Plea Entered In Huddle House Assault

WEST POINT (WCBI) – The first plea is entered in connection with what was called a racially motivated beating outside a West Point restaurant.  District Attorney Scott Colom says 24 year old Courtez McMillian of Okolona pled guilty to aggravated assault in connection with the 2014 beating of Ralph Weems outside of the Huddle House in West Point.

McMillian was sentenced to time served in exchange for his agreement to testify against two other defendants in the case. Those two men stand trial later this year.   The episode unfolded when Weems and a friend argued with McMillian and others at one West Point restaurant.   The situation escalated when both groups crossed paths a few minutes later in the parking lot at the Huddle House. Weems was severely beaten and is still suffering long term effects of the attack.   Columbus attorney David Owen represents the Weems family in a civil lawsuit. He says he is very limited in what he can discuss because of the ongoing civil matter but adds his client has been kept informed about the criminal plea talks and supports  the manner the District Attorney is handling that portion of the incident.
