Residents React To Former NBA Player Travis Outlaw’s Indictment

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-Former NBA player and Starkville High School standout Travis Outlaw was arrested last week after a grand jury indicted him on a felony marijuana charge.

The indictment accuses Outlaw of possessing more than 250 grams of marijuana.

Outlaw is a hometown hero who’s known for all of the good deeds he does for the Starkville community.

“Travis has always been there for the people,” said Michael Taylor, Starkville resident.

“He’s given a lot of the city of Starkville for the park and recreations, he gives out turkey give-a-ways for thanksgiving, he’s just a great guy,” said Hobie Hobart, Starkville resident.

But it was just last week when residents found out their hometown hero had been indicted on a felony marijuana charge.

“It was shocking,” said Stanley Higgins, Starkville resident.

“It was sad and upsetting because he’s a true role model to this county,” said Taylor.

“You do great things, you do all of these great things and something like this sets you back, and that’s what your going to be known as or remembered for,” said Hobart.

Some residents are refusing to believe the Former NBA Player would do something like this.

“I just don’t believe that because his parents are good people and everybody I know deal with him pretty good, so I don’t see it myself,” said Higgins.

Outlaw is an icon in the Starkville community and many people look up to him, but with that praise comes high expectations. .

“They’re role models,” said Hobart. “I remember Charles Barkley once said, I don’t want to be a role model, well you are a role model, you’re going to be one that’s just where you are in life and people look up to you, lots of kids look up to you, and that’s what they want to do.”

However, in the wake of the this incident, Starkville residents believe with all of the good that Outlaw does the community, this incident shouldn’t leave a stain on his reputation.

“He may have fallen but he has always gotten back up and shaken himself off and cleaned himself up, Travis will move on with his life and move forward form this,” said Taylor.

The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics is currently investigating the case.

This case allegedly stems from an incident that first happened in July of 2015.

His annual Travis Outlaw Day is still scheduled for August 27th at Mckee Park in Starkville.
