Video: 2017 MSU Diversity Conference

STARKVILLE,Miss.(WCBI)—Diversity in higher education is the message as the 2 day diversity conference kicks of on Mississippi State’s campus.

MSNBC’s Jeff Johnson was the keynote speaker for Thursday’s session and he says white supremacy has manifests it’s self through both public and private colleges and universities.

Johnson says during the conference he hopes to generate a meaningful dialogue on how to use “our voices” to champion diversity in institutions across the country but it starts with the younger generations.

“I think it’s important for students in particular to re-frame how they want to do this kind of work so many times they’ve been asked to model previous generations and it never works. And so for students to be working and figuring out one what it means to them two how they make this work pragmatic, is very important,”said Johnson.

Johnson concluded his session with student round table discussions. Friday’s session begins at 9-a.m. with Dr. Timothy Fair discussing how to engage in civil discourse.
