Video: Calhoun City Goes For The Gold Ball On Friday

CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) — Calhoun City Wildcats have a history for making it to the state championship game in football, and they will look to bring home the gold ball for the first time since 1989.

The Calhoun City Wildcats have rolled through the post season with four playoff wins over O’bannon, J.Z George, West Bolivar, and Baldwyn. Winning those games has helped this team come along way since their last loss against Houston.

“We’ve won four games in the playoffs, and every week our defense has played outstanding. We’ve just played good solid defense. Offensively we’ve moved the ball. I think last week we’ve probably executed the best we have offensively,” said head coach Perry Liles.

“It’s been a good confidence building leading up to this game because we really haven’t had a close game, but I think as the weeks progressed through these four playoff games we’ve got a lot better,” said quarterback JoJo Gray.

It’s championship week for the Calhoun City Wildcats. Making their first state championship appearance since the 2014 season, and the last they were there they faced a team in Bassfield, but they are not going to see Bassfield on Friday. They were upset last week by Bay Springs.

“Bay Springs runs the Wing T like Bassfield, and they have really good players, so we’ll be challenged to be successful for sure,” Liles said.

“We are just going to have to make plays. Just make tackles, and just make the plays we are suppose to,” Gray adds.

This will be the Wildcats eleventh title appearance, and winning that state championship would give the school and community something to be proud of.

“I think that would be very exciting for our kids and community. We want to get that done, and it would be great for our kids and community to show them we can do it,” Liles said.

“It would mean a lot to me and my team and the city because  feel like the city needs it. We need something special to happen to us like that,” adds wide receiver Tyrese Quinn.
