GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI)-You do not have to be a Duck Dynasty fan to know about the latest controversy involving A&E suspending one of the dynasty members, Phil Robertson, for his somments on homosexuality in an interview featured in January’s edition of GQ Magazine.
The beards are back in the spotlight.. But not for their outdoor antics or witty one-liners. The future of A & E hit show “Duck Dynasty” may be uncertain, but the opinions on the suspension of Duck Commander and family patriarch Phil Roberston are clear.
Take Nell Hargrave as an example. She drove all the way from Jackson Mississippi to Monroe Louisiana to show her support of Robertson.
“I’m upset about it and I came to show my support for everyone’s freedom of speech,” Nell Hargrave.
Now, fans in the Golden Triangle are getting in on the conversation.
“I thoroughly disagree with what A&E has done and it’s a sad day when Miley Cyrus who gets celebrated and has a Christmas special and Phil Robertson gets suspended for views that are in line with biblical principles,” says Charles Holtzlander.
“The morality is just dropping in this country bad and it is only getting worse. He could have stood up there and said he hated Christians and there would had never been a word said,” says Wesley Turnage.
The Duck Dynasty star has always been open about his beliefs on the show, and some say the First Amendment should have protected him from suspension.
“I think that he was just giving freedom of speech and which we all have and at this time they are trying to take that away from us which I think is wrong,” says Sherry Plunkett.
Whether you agree or disagree with Phil Robertson’s views the question remains: Will the show go on?
The Robertson family released a statement earlier Friday saying:
“We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty.”
