CALHOUN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-

When it comes to natural disasters, all first responders immediately become clocked in. They sacrifice being with their family’s and loved ones to patrol the streets and help where they can.

“People still in boats; trying to get neighbors out their animals, you know trying to recover some of their belongings. You know it’s just total devastation.” said Pollan.

That’s what Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan saw first hand this week when he went to Louisiana.

“I have tons of friends and also two step brothers that still live in Livingston parish.” said Pollans.

The flooding in Louisiana is the worst natural disaster the country has seen since Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey shore.

The floods have left 13 people dead and over 40-thousand homes damaged.

That’s why Pollan’s office is currently collecting donations for the victims of the flooding.

He has already visited some of the towns affected and dropped of supplies, and plans to go back Friday with an even bigger cargo of collected donations.

“This is something very small that we can do that we can do to try and help them get through it.”said Pollan.

Pollan says that his heart goes out to the first responders in Louisiana.

“These men and women had to get up and put their uniform on and go and help, they had to leave their homes, leave their families, leave their pets, whatever it was and have to go and do their job. They’re out having to work doing search and rescue be out their cleaning up their parish but yet they’ve been devastated also at the same time.” said Pollan.

Pollan says that the feedback from the local community and eagerness to help, warms his heart.

If you would like to help, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office is collecting supplies until 5pm tomorrow.

They are in need of food, water and toiletries. They are accepting monetary donations as well.
