Video: Technology In The Classroom

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Cell phones, computers, social media, it’s everywhere.

Technology has became a way of life. That’s also why more schools are fielding competitive teams of tech-savvy students.

As with most things in life, education is the key. Today’s high school students are using classroom lessons to map a future in technology.

Developing an app is one way these students are jumping into the tech world.

“It takes a lot of time to come up with names, and what to put on a poster board, and all of that, and how to use it on your phone, and stuff like that,” says Webster County Career and Technology Center student, Clayton Mixon.

Competitions like this one help students focus their skills.

“We did prepare for this. We looked into the apps, and we practiced with those, and we did some kahoot challenges, and we kind of researched Mississippi State and the different departments that will be on, and we also just worked on videos and stuff. We also did a promotional video for our school in order to prepare,” says Starkville Academy IT Essentials student, KarLee Mcneel.

Dr. Connie Forde works with moving students into an ever-changing work force.

“Everyone is using technology, and of course, all fields are using technology and so in the schools, it has just moved further and further down, and so elementary students, middle school students, high school students, everyone’s learning technology.”

Schools are reaching students with programs like STEM, and IT Essentials; each with its own technology focus.

“STEM. It’s more of, you have science, technology, and engineering, and mathematics, and so they really focus in on those four core areas. Mine goes a little bit further. We’re more into the technology part, and the business part of it, so my students will learn about Microsoft Office. They’ll learn business, personal finance, and those types of things,” says Webster County Career and Technology Center teacher, Dionne Hodges.

They’ll also learn how to enhance their tech-savvy skills.

“It’s important because like everything we do in school, it involves technology, so it’s just basically our lives,” says New Hope High School student, Ashleigh Williams.

Some students at the competition said they’re involved in the technology programs at their schools because they want to have a future career in technology.
