PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI)-A group of Pontotoc area church congregations are taking seriously the command of Jesus to feed the hungry.

First Baptist Church Pastor Ken Hester takes on the role of drill sergeant, at his disposal, an army of Christian soldiers focused on the mission at hand.

“We’ll be taking a good hot Thanksgiving meal to around 3,300 people today around our county today. To the poor, to the elderly, to the shut in and we just want to extend the love of Christ to them in a very tangible way,” said Pastor Ken Hester, Pontotoc Baptist Church.

It is a gigantic effort, not just First Baptist Church, but other area churches as well. Parishioners say they are obeying the command of the Lord when he tells them to go out and feed the hungry.

Volunteers of this mighty feat of compassion includes teenagers from surrounding high schools and some members of the local girl scout troop.

“We have one girl here right this minute and then we are going to have about six girls as school lets out. And the mothers have come together today to pull the weight of their children that are not here today[Thursday],” said Kristy Hare, Volunteer.

“Just to really help out the community and serve them and its just a great way to give back. And I just want to really help out the church and be involved,” said Carlie Mapp, Pontotoc High School.

“I’m doing this because I know that people here, they need more than we do and I’m just trying to share the love of Christ that he gave to us,” said Mack Warren, Volunteer.

Although just a little short of five thousand, the number in terms of theological goal, I’m sure the Divine Commander of the army of do-gooders is saluting their accomplishments.

“Its truly an honor to serve the King of Kings,” said Pastor Hester.

Nineteen years ago this month, volunteers fed only about 493 needy people.
