Leads, Info Sought in Houston Slaying

HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) — Houston police are investigating the death of an elderly man found in his home.

Police tape could be seen Tuesday morning around the Aberdeen Road home of 76-year-old William Ray Bevill’s home just off Highway 8 in Houston. Bevill’s relatives had tried unsuccessfully to reach him by phone over the weekend and decided to call police.

“We approached the house out there and when we went inside, we saw him there and backed out. We got the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation up here. They did the crime scene for us,” Police Chief Billy Voyles said.

Bevels attended Faith bible Church. When he didn’t show up for Sunday’s services, some church members feared the worst.

Chickasaw County Sheriff and MBI agents are assisting in the investigation. Detetives don’t have anyone in custody and spent Tuesday sorting through evidence recovered from the home Monday night. Agents also aren’t talking about a motive but they do know Bevills, who lived alone, confronted his attacker.

“You know we are treating it as a homicide investigation. There is signs of a struggle and foul play,” said Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy James Meyers.

The death has shaken the normally quiet town.

“It’s a pretty quiet little town around here. Its strange something like this happens around Houston. But you know times are changing,” Voyles said.

The body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

Anyone who might have seen anyone in the area or heard anything is asked to call the Houston Police Department at 456-5065 or Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department at 456-2339.
