STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — You can rent a house, a car, and on Friday you can even rent a dog.

The student chapter of the Oktibbeha County Humane Society is letting you pay to play with a pup to raise money for a local animal shelter.

“It’s really great because you get the dogs out of the shelter, and they get played with, and we’re making money for the shelter,” said Kate Thompson, club president.

Mississippi State University students are renting pups from the Oktibbeha County Humane Society for 20 minutes to help the dogs find loving homes.

“Pretty much all the dogs that we bring to Rent-A-Pup get adopted that day, or within the next week by people who come to this event,” Thompson said.

Sophomore Blake Moore lives in a dorm on campus, where dogs aren’t allowed. So you can bet he misses his eight dogs at home – three hours away.

“My favorite dog at home is Goober,” Moore said. “And if I can’t sleep with Goober, I might as well find another dog that I can play with, and she is lovely.”

Any chance these animal lovers get to play with a dog, they’ll take it.

“Sometimes you just need something soft that’s adorable, and loving, and just doesn’t care how you’ve been,” said sophomore Sarah Kleinwechter. “Will just come up, and love you anyway.”

A reason why they’re called man’s best friend.

“If I could take her home, I would, just to add to the collection,” Moore said.

Thompson says they raised about $1,500 the last time they held the event, which they do once a semester.
