TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – About 20 elementary age children are spending their week learning valuable skills from police officers. They are taking part in the annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE Camp, put on by the Tupelo Police Department.

All week they have been at Lawndale Elementary, learning about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. They have also been learning about what to do if they need help in various situations. The camp is also a way for the police to establish positive rapport with youngsters.

“They’re great, they’re fun and I’m glad I signed up for this camp.”

“We’ve had a great time, and we look forward to spending time with each and every one of the kids, getting to know them and putting some good input into their lives try to lead them in the right direction.”

The DARE Camp is for 5th and 6th graders. The campers also get to take field trips to the movies, the bowling alley and the aquatics center.
