TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Last minute preparations are underway for a weekend unveiling of a marker honoring those who served in the Mighty Eighth Army Air Force.

This Saturday, at Veteran’s Park, a marker honoring Mississippians who served in the Mighty 8th Army Air Force during World War II will be dedicated.

Approximately 350,000 officers and men had served in the 8th AAF during the three year or so period in which the Americans participated in the European Theater.

Eugene Spearman was one of those who served and he will be there for the ceremony Saturday.

“It’s real important to me,” said Spearman. “I’m real proud that we have this monument and are dedicating it,  I have, my two brothers and myself are on this brick walkway over here and now this monument is dedicated to members of the 8th Air Force and I’m real proud of it.”

Spearman and three other Mighty 8th Army Air Force veterans will be at the ceremony and they will also be signing books detailing their service and sacrifice.
