COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It was way back in 1933 when a collection of brightly colored panels were stapled together to create the world’s first comic book.

Comics may have evolved, but they are just as popular as ever.
Through the the generations, the young and young at heart have enjoyed keeping up with costume clad crime fighters as they embark on endless adventures.

Bill Roseman recently paid a visit to the Friendly City.

True believers know, Bill as editor for some of Marvel’s most famous titles, including Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Avengers.

He explains the appeal of comics this way, ” They give us, first of all, first of all an escape, and hopefully they give us an inspiration. And heroes help show us the best that we can be, and maybe they will inspire us to do good deeds as well. ”

In a world that can be both scary and dull at the time comics strike a chord with the kid in all of us.

Bill asks, ” Who doesn’t want to be able to fly, to be able to lift a car that may be on someone? Who doesn’t desire to put on a mask and be somebody else? ”

Still, you don’t seem to see comics as often on news stands in drug and grocery stores. Does that mean interest is waning? No way.

Bill says, ” Well you can actually find them all around you. Libraries have good graphic novel sections. Most good book stores have a good graphic novel section.”

And then, there is the internet.

It’s opened comics up to the next generation.

New talent is streaming in as a fast as reader feedback.

Marvel comics, there’s an app for that.

Bill says, ” You now have a comic on your smart phone, so you can live anywhere and as long you have a good connection, you can download and buy comics the same day they come out in print.”

So the comic business is as healthy as ever, you just have to know where to look.

Superman turns 75 this year. A near mint condition copy of Action Comics Number One, where Superman first appeared, would cost you somewhere north of 4 million dollars.
