Alabama Governor kicks off 2026 Summer Reading Challenge

ALABAMA, Miss. (WCBI) – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging the state’s youngest Alabamians to stay active in their learning over summer break.

Today, the governor kicked off the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge.

This is for students entering kindergarten through 8th grade.

The kiddos are tasked to read six books between now and August 1.

And this year’s theme has a patriotic twist to it.

“As another school year comes to a close, I congratulate you on all of your hard work. Now, summers finally here, and I know many of you are ready to trade in homework for some Alabama sunshine, and I don’t blame you one bit. But before you put those backpacks away, I have an assignment for you. As America prepares to celebrate our nations 250 birthday, I am inviting you, students, entering kindergarten through 8th grade, to my summer reading challenge. All you have to do is read six books between now and August 1st. You can choose any books you would like. But I especially encourage you to read books about America, our history, our heroes, our good, hardworking people, and the values that make this the greatest nation on earth”, said

Participants will log and submit either a written reflection or a drawing describing what they learned about the United States of America during their summer reading.

Completed reading logs and reflections must be mailed by August 1, 2026.
