Off-duty officer involved shooting in Columbus, no injuries reported

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Columbus Police confirm an off-duty officer exchanged gunfire with an armed robbery suspect early Wednesday morning.

The officer was off duty as a customer at the Princess Theatre when the exchange happened around midnight.

Early reports indicate the suspect fired at the officer and the officer shot back outside the Princess Theatre on Fifth Street in downtown Columbus.

The officer and suspect then got into a foot-chase after the robbery, before losing him a block away.

Police are still looking for the suspect. The suspect is described as a black male wearing an orange bandana over his face.

Officials blocked off a portion of the street outside the business, as the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was investigating the case.

Because this was off-duty, the officer will return to work as scheduled. The officer was legally armed with an off-duty weapon at the time of the incident.

Columbus Police will not identify the officer involved due to the case being under investigation.

If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect, call Crimestoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
