FIRST LOOK: Record Breaking Heat Expected into the Beginning of October

Columbus, MISS. (WCBI) – Record breaking heat is expected for at least the next week.  Here’s a look at some data from the region showing how hot September has been and how unusual this late summer heat spell has been.

Summary by City

Tupelo: Temperatures in the Tupelo area have hit 95° in October only three times since modern records began. That happened in 1938, 1939 and 1941. The all time record high for the month of October is 96 (1938).  Our forecast calls for Tupelo to tie or break that all time record in 1938, and add 2019 as only the 4th October ever to reach 95°.

Columbus: Temperatures in the Columbus area have hit 95 in October during the following years; 1904, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1916, 1919, 1923, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1937, 1938, 1951, 1953, and 1954. Based on our forecast this morning, we’ll add 2019 to that list, something that hasn’t happened in 65 years.

That happened in 1911 (98), 1954 (96) and 1931 (96).  Our forecast calls for Starkville to reach 95 in October for only the 4th time since modern records began, but we should stay just shy of the all time record high set in 1911.
