COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Thanksgiving is over and it’s time to put up the Christmas decorations. And what better way to kick off the holiday season than going out and buying a Christmas tree.

Ryan Aaron, his wife Kim Aaron, and their two kids Sydney and Michael wanted to change things up this holiday season.

“We wanted to come to a Christmas tree farm this year and cut down our tree,” says Kim Aaron.

So, they hopped on the tractor and went searching for their first tree at the Swedenburg Christmas Tree Farm. There were a couple of beautiful ones..some short, some thick, but after a few minutes, they found the perfect one.

“It was fun for me. I just got to pick it out,” says Kim.

It wasn’t quite as easy for Ryan though. He had a hard time sawing off the tree.

“He had to do all the work,” Kim says looking at her husband. “Yeah, I had to do the sawing so i’m worn out,” says Ryan.

The Swedenburg’s say it takes about 3 to 4 years for a tree to grow from a foot and a half seedling, to a 6 to 8 foot tree. And once it’s that tall, they sell it to the public. Carolyn Swedenburg and her husband have been selling trees on their farm since 1978. From the joy ride on the tractor to helping customers haul the perfect tree, it’s a unique tradition families enjoy every year.

” This is just something that we do for our customers, they can ride the wagon down to the field and then we bring them back and the tree and they don’t have to handle their tree and we put it on the shaker and shake the normal needle shed and put it in netting and load it on their vehicle for them,” says Swedenburg.

But seeing the smiling faces of the families is what makes it all worthwhile.

“It really is fun when the children who used to be children, and now they’re grown and have their own children, come out and cut their tree,” says Swedenburg.

Ryan and Kim say they will now make coming to the tree farm a holiday tradition. But, Ryan does have some advice for other first-time tree shoppers.

“Bring some tennis shoes!! And a saw!! If you have a chainsaw that works alot better!”

The Swedenburg Christmas Tree Farm begins selling their trees the Saturday after thanksgiving.
