HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – Wednesday is National NCAA Football Signing Day and all recruiting eyes are on a young gifted defensive end from Houston High School.

There has been a lot of speculation and brew ha-ha from sports fans in the Houston/Chickasaw County area and beyond. And what college he’ll sign with and play for….is still up in air.

Every now and then a talented football athlete having made a mark at his local high school takes his game to another level.

Houston High senior and defensive end Chris Jones signs his letter of intent Wednesday (2/6).

Jones has helped his team mates capture 11 wins this season, the most in the history of the school’s athletic football program.

“He is a great kid, outstanding young man. On and off the field, a terrific leader,” said William Cook, HHS Head Coach.

“You know you don’t find too many young men that can get out there and perform the way he does and be as humble as he has been,” said Elywin Wesco, Houston.

“I mean anytime you have got somebody as big as he is that can move, with the wing span. And as fast and agile as he is, you don’t find that every day that just something special,” said Cook.

The incredible ability of the 6-6 260 pound player is well documented, as cheering fans on the sidelines witnessed in an important game between the Hilltoppers and the Louisville wildcats.

“In the first quarter where he jumped and picked off a screen pass and then went 70 yards for a touch down. I mean as big as he is, he is out running all the skilled players,” said Cook.

“Any school would love to have him. Me personally, I would like to see him go to Valley State. Thats my alma mater, but,” said Wesco.

So as Jones signs on the dotted line, papers from whatever college, according to his coach one thing is certain.

“He has done well at Houston, and he’ll make Houston proud where ever he goes,” added Cook.

WCBI News will be at Houston High School early Wednesday morning when Chris Jones picks up that pen on National Signing Day.
