VIDEO: Preparing For The Golden Egg

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s that time of year; that both Mississippi State Bull Dog and Ole Miss Rebel fans have been waiting for and we aren’t talking about Thanksgiving.

The annual Egg bowl is a deeply rooted tradition with a rivalry to match.

The rivalry of the region is set to face off in just a few hours.

“It’s dated back for a long time. When it comes down to it runs and records for the season don’t really matter when it comes down to it. It’s just good ole fashion hate,”said MSU Freshman

Thanksgiving day fans will pack Davis Wade Stadium. In preparation for what some fans call the biggest game of the years, both universities have released a statement encouraging fans to enjoy the game but control tempers.

“Of course it has a lot more ramifications for State but because of the rivalry,”said Kevin Gorta.

Mississippi State University Police Chief Vance Rice says given the gravity of the Thursday’s game calls for extra precautions.

“We’ll have some additional officers because of the added rivalry that has amped up this year over previous years although the rivalry has been large for years. We are prepared,”said Rice.

Rice says they campus is expecting heavy traffic. He says you’d be surprised at how many altercations are avoided if fans just knew where they were going. Chief Rice you can check out the school’s website.

There is a game day traffic tab where they can see the traffic flow pattern and they need to try and enter campus as close to where they plan to park as possible because many of the roads are blocked off and you can’t just drive to the other side of campus,”said Rice.

Gorta says though rivalries can be potentially dangerous they are vital to the sport.

“It makes for a great football game. There’s so much love and hate that it makes for a great atmosphere and a great game,”said Gorta.

“When it comes down to it, the citizens of Mississippi are kind hospitable people. When it all comes down in the end I think that will be the norm,” said Rice.

Kick off is at 6:30.
