Wintry Mix Causes Multiple Wrecks, Power Outages

A mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow moved through parts of the area this morning causing slippery roads and numerous accidents to occur Friday morning.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol office in New Albany said they responded to over 40 vehicle accidents along I-22 between Tupelo and Holly Springs.  There were no injuries reported in any of those crashes.  They encourage nobody travel west on I-22 today as the roads are covered in ice and snow, particularly in Union County.

South of Batesville in Panola County, two tractor trailers collided causing I-55 to be shut down for several hours early Friday morning.  The cause of the crash was likely due to slick roads as a mixture of sleet and snow was falling at the time.  Other accidents were reported in Yalobusha, Pontotoc, Lee, Lafayette, and Prentiss Counties.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation also reported late Friday morning that roads were partially covered in ice for Attala, Montgomery, Carroll and Grenada counties.  Traffic was slow along I-55 from Winona to Grenada.

Earlier Friday Morning, over 1200 people were out of power according to 4 County Electric after strong winds rolled through.  The cause was not clear as crews worked to restore service along South Montgomery and in rural parts of southern Oktibbeha County.  Other outages have been reported across the region and crews are continuing to make repairs as needed.

With temperatures falling through the day, it is likely that road conditions will continue to deteriorate.  Be sure to follow WCBI Weather on Facebook and Twitter, download our WCBI mobile app on your smartphone, and check our website, wcbi.com/weather for the latest updates.
