TUPELO, Miss. ( WCBI) — Without the revolution there wouldn’t be a United States of America.

Saturday the veterans of the revolution who settled in Mississippi received a special recognition at Tupelo’s Veterans Park.

Saturday morning the Mary Stuart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Olde Towne Society Children of the American Revolution dedicated a Memorial Marker for the veterans of the Revolution who are buried in Mississippi. Alice Jennings of Tupelo is the Chapter Regent.

“After the war a lot of the families moved west and Mississippi was west and they came here in Mississippi all over the state and made their homes and when they died they were buried here,” Jennings explains.

Polly Grimes is the Honorary State Regent for the Mississippi State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She says the Revolutionary War Monument is an important addition to Veterans Park.

“These are our first veterans,” she notes. “And to recognize them and to have this monument here is of tremendous importance and just adds to the recognition by the Tupelo city and this group of people as to how important it is,”

Even on the very day of the dedication of this Revolutionary War Memorial construction is continuing here at Veterans Park. Of course the F-105 Thunderchief is another recent addition. And eventually the goal is to build a 60-percent replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC.
