TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s one of the old scams around but it continues to swindle people out of hundreds of dollars. Today Lee County law enforcement held a press conference to warn of the dangers. Scammers are mainly targeting the elderly. The cashiers checks or money orders look real. A note asks the person to deposit the 15 hundred check and mail back 13 hundred. Victims believe they are making a two hundred profit out of the deal but they end up losing. It can be a complicated investigation for officers but they need help.

“Most of the time they are from out of state or in a lot of cases out of the country. So it’s very hard to prosecute and catch these people, but we absolutely have to have some information or we can’t even start to process our case against them.”

If you receive a check or money order that you didn’t request, contact your local law enforcement.
