WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI)- A West Point attorney becomes the first African- American city Judge.
Tuesday night, the West Point Mayor and Selectman welcomed Bennie Jones as the new city judge.
Current Municipal Court Judge Mark Cliett submitted a letter to the board stating he would be stepping down as judge effective Feb. 28.
Jones will serve as the city judge until June 30th at which point a new city administration will take over.
The new board will decide on who will serve for the next four years as municipal judge and municipal prosecuting attorney.
Jones says he does not plan to reapply for the judge’s seat after the new administration has been elected.
